2062                                  The Mark of the Peacock
“Halt!  Stop and you shall have a merciful death!”  A guard called after a girl with dark brown curly hair who was darting in and out of street vendors.
The guards started shooting their arrows and slashing with their swords.  People screamed trying to get out of the way. The girl dashed into alley followed closely by the soldiers, she tried to run but there was only a brick wall, it was a dead end.
Pocketing the ruby she stole, she turned to the soldiers, there were about six of them, she could take them.
“Hand it over and we will not torture you,” the captain of the guard angrily yelled out.
The girl smirked and reaching into her backpack drew two swords.  The soldiers laughed at her, bows and arrows poised they started shooting.  The girl pushed off the wall and ran using the swords to deflect the volley of arrows.  She quickly re-sheathed the swords and started crawling between the leaders’ legs. Surprised, he slashed with his sword down at her but she was already behind him, she broke his neck before he could do anything.  Grabbing the man’s sword, she whirled around to face the rest of them. By this time all of the guards fled, this girl had attacked before, they knew they would need back up. With a sigh, she walked out of the alley grabbing all the arrows she found embedded on the walls.  Things were getting dangerous, there were more guards about and winter was coming. She would have to tell Henry, they may need to take the rebellion into the mountains.
Four Years Before..
It was a nice warm day which was unusual for March but nine year old Luna didn't care.  She was happily skipping along the wind whipped grass while she played with her parents.  She pretended she was driving a car or an airplane. She had never seen one of course. When she was a baby, most metal things had been banned.
Each family member was only to have one spoon, fork and knife per person.  Anything that had to have metal things to operate such as the bakery was under close watch so they wouldn’t sell any on the black market.  Any language besides English was banned; it had been so since the beginning of World War III which ended six years back. Today was her birthday; they were taking the long walk to the store, they were going to pick up the cake at the bakery.
When they arrived at town she was told to wait in the town square.  She played by the well, with her cloth doll when a boy her age sat down beside her.
“Hi, I’m Henry.  What’s your name?”  He asked picking at the grass
“I am Luna, it’s my birthday today.”  Luna answered setting down her doll.
“Nice, has it been good?”  He asked climbing up on one side of the well and dangling his legs inside.
“Not really,” Luna answered, she didn’t want to tell him why.
“Well, I guess I will see you around, we are leaving for a couple days.”  With that Henry left
No children in this village ever talked with her, what was this kid up to?
It was only a couple minutes until her parents came to get her.  They seemed really tense and sad. Taking hold of both of her parents’ hands, they walked home silently.  When they arrived at their house her father handed her a piece of paper which look like an edict from the newly crowned king Dasan.
“Read it.”
"To keep track of payments, whose family and more necessary information, of an individual, I have written another law.  I hereby command a tattoo to be given to each person who is under my reign of power. I am setting up stations in each village to give this tattoo.  You shall receive a mark, a head of a peacock. If you are royalty you are to be given the whole animal of the peacock. Each tattoo is different; this will avoid confusion between classes.  The tattoo is given to children if they are 2 years or older. If anyone does not obey this command I shall set fire to that entire village except those with the tattoo.
I hereby pass this as the law,
Dasan V."
Luna read aloud, when she had finished her parents told her they were rebelling.
It was just a picture of a peacock.
When she asked her parents why they were rebelling, they said that they had taken an oath. Luna immediately wanted to take the oath too; her parents agreed, and decided to allow their daughter to take the oath, that night.
“I, Luna Cozar, take an oath that no mark or any such thing that God had not given me by birth shall not be on my body.  Nothing can undo what I have just said and I will face death if need be than to violate my oath.”
Her parents started crying when Luna had finished.

Chapter Two
A couple days later, it happened.  Dasan attacked her village without warning.  She could still hear the wailing of children taken away from their parents and killed before their very eyes.  They dragged the children to a large cart that had iron bars and a door and thrown them inside. POUND! POUND!  THUD!

The guards were trying to bust down Luna’s door.

“Take this, key may it unlock the safe house and take this compass so you will know who to take with you.”  Her mother whispered to Luna shoving the things in Luna’s pockets.
Showing their daughter where to step, they made her climb a post that held up the house which was connected to a large beam, high above them.  For reasons unknown to Luna, her parents did not join her upon that rafter but instead, let the guards bust down the door and find them. She laid belly first on the rough wooden rafter watching silently in agony to see what was to become of her parents.  She bit her lip and it began to bleed. Dasan appeared among the guards. His black hair was swept, probably from the wind. Dressed in black, he drew his sword and spoke to her parents but not in English. Luckily, Luna’s parents taught her every language they knew despite the law.
Weird though, that Dasan would break his own law.  Thought Luna to herself, trying to hear what Dasan was saying.
“Albert!  Why are you doing this?  Are we not your family?” Luna’s mother asked in Latin.
These questions seemed to make Dasan even more angry and violent.  Luna nearly gasped when her mother said this. They were related to Dasan?!
“Receive the mark or I will be forced to kill you.”  Growled Dasan, in Greek.
“You know what you must do!  We have taken the oath! Kill us traitor to the Gifted’s!”  Cried her parents faithfully, holding each other.
Gritting his teeth, Dasan lunged with his sword, finishing them both.  Luna bit her lip hard to keep from screaming out of anger. Leaving her parents crumpled on the ground, Dasan turned to the guards.
“Take all the children, kill their parents, burn every home but this one.”  He ordered in English, stepping out the door and onto a horse, riding it back into the night.  Luna stayed up on the rafter until the sun rose; even then she still wasn’t convinced they were gone.  She couldn’t bear to look at her parents, so she stood in the doorway, watching the plumes of smoke rising from the ashes of houses.  This had to be the worst birthday ever. Why would Dasan keep doing edicts and end up killing her people on her birthday? Weren’t the Gifted’s legendary superheroes that had died because they started World War III?  She dragged her parents outside and buried them sobbing with every shovelful of dirt. She buried the rest of the parents and barely made it to her front door before she dropped dead tired because of exhaustion.
She woke up with a start, remembering what had happened she tried to think; she knew she would have to provide for herself.  There was a town not too far away, she could beg or better yet steal food and money. She could try to survive. A couple days later when Luna was walking among the ashes of the homes searching for tools, Henry came.  He was dirty and looked beaten up pretty badly when he crested the hill to their village.
He passed out as he wobbled to the edge of the village, Luna didn’t know quite what to do so she dragged him into her house and tried to clean him up as best she could.
*
Luna ran like the wind, she just got away with stealing some ointment and a loaf of bread, two precious things she needed.  When she got to her house she was surprised to see Henry sitting up, it had been almost three days since he stumbled to their village.
“Where is everyone?” He asked rubbing his head.

Secondly, this story is really exciting! It reads a bit rough in some places (nothing a little editing can't fix), but I can see how you're wanting to story to go. It sounds really intriguing and I definitely would like to know more! (Though I dunno...I can't imagine anyone screaming in Latin, lol.)

  4. A world where metal is heavily regulated sounds intriguing, Ry! But poor little Luna - watching her parents die would definitely leave her messed-up emotionally. :(
